The artist has donated the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to protect the United Kingdom's independent live music spots.

The star was awarded the cheque on mid-October as his latest record the album was declared the top album of the past year.

Fender has opted to donate the funds to the trust, in appreciation of the vital role local spots had in his beginning days.

"I couldn't be pursuing my current career if it wasn't for all the performances I played around the area, and further afield, when I was beginning," remarked Sam Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Recently, major artists like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by applying a small levy to their admission fees, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

He also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to support numerous small stages across the UK.

The donation helped locations that were facing imminent closure due to challenges arising from flooding, blazes and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, court cases and sound issues.

Additional spaces were granted financial assistance in upgrading amenities and gear that positively impacted musicians and audiences.

"The idea that money from shows in major spaces backs the smaller venues, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," the star has commented.

Fender is not the first artist to give his honor winnings to worthy causes.

In they received the award in the mid-90s for their album their work, lead singer the singer stated that the act would donate their prize money to the charity War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer she divided her bounty among multiple good causes, such as the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I contributed a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they required better apparatus," the artist explained to a publication.

Previously, Ezra Collective contributed their winnings to the community center that developed their band, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

Also 1994 winners M People donated their winnings to a charity for MS after a close contact was found to have the illness.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," remarked vocalist Small. "The money was the extra but we could do without the bonus, because we had the honor. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

In the past week, the MVT announced it had saved several grassroots venues in the South East, by placing them under local control.

The first in the city and the other in that location were purchased under the community ownership program, which is supported by a national body and supporters who purchase "shares" in the buildings.
