Medvedev, the past champion, had lost his last six title deciders, featuring in the German tournament previously this season.

The player's defensive play style and recurring outbursts on court had caused commentators to question if his skill to compete at the highest level was over.

However the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the past month, attempting to advance forward and compete positively, backed up by an enhanced serve.

Medvedev recovered from a disadvantage in the opening set against the difficult Moutet, winning 4 of the last five games to gain the advantage.

The competitors swapped break points in the second set before the challenger, attempting for his maiden professional victory, gained dominance to create a final set.

Moutet defended 4 early break points in a close deciding set before Medvedev broke to that score to serve for the match.

Appropriately, Medvedev clinched the title with a shot at the front of the court, with his opponent unable to control a shot after over two and a half hours.
