Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing these medications need to be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
