In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
