Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
